4 February 1959 Afterburner

The 4 February 1959 issue of Afterburner had a couple of AFPS cartoons, as well as some local artwork.
Yet another Rhyme of the Times distributed by AFPS. This recurring strip is really lame, and I can't believe they were any more interesting to the 1959 audience of young Airmen and dependents stationed at Yokota.
Ah, now this AFPS piece called SOP (pronounced "S-O-P," it's a military acronym that stands for "Standard Operating Procedure") is interesting. The art is good, and it's pretty funny. What's most notable is how blatently sexist it is. My, how attitudes have changed in the last 50-odd years.
Here's a locally produced ski map that accompanied an article on skiing in Japan.  I love the hand-drawn font that's covered with snow. Probably done by John Boyle.
A John Boyle piece work from page 5 that mixed drawings and photos that accompanied an article on Yokota's military education instructors. It looks like something one would have seen in a high school year book.
With the strictures that were undoubtedly in place it must have tough to be an AFPS cartoonist. Wow, this is truly bad.
This ryhme is ok I guess, but why were there two in one issue? There must have been some space to fill in this week's paper.
This was from page 8, the sports page. It's another John Boyle creation.
