11 February 1959 Afterburner

As I think you'll agree, the 11 February 1959 edition of Yokota's Afterburner newspaper had some pretty nice graphics, both locally produced and from AFPS.

Well, maybe not this one. Another lame Rhymes of the Times. Think about safety every inch of the way? Right. I guess simple poems such as this were considered effective in the old days.
OK, now we're talking! Great art for Valentines Day by Johnson via AFPS. Of course the lecherous looks by the cartoon characters are creepy as hell, again giving us insight into prevailing attitudes of the late 1950s.
This is really interesting, artistically as well as historically. Wakanohana was a famous sumo wrestler who visited Yokota in February 1959. He even received a 45-minute flight in a fighter which I can say with almost 100% certainty that that would never happen today. The artwork in this image and below was done locally by a Japanese staff artist Mr. Hideo Manabe whose name we'll see in future blogs.

Another SNAFU from AFPS. Not too bad.
A nice local sports piece by none other than sports editor John Boyle.
